Pineland Petunia

Pineland petunia
Ruellia caroliniensis

There are various natural varieties of this plant with subtle differences.  This is an 18 inch tall plant with 1.5 inch wide blue flowers that makes a nice ground cover.  Found in pinelands, and oak hammocks of south Florida north to Virginia and west to Texas.

This is a good replacement for the horribly invasive Mexican Bluebell or Mexican Ruellia that is commonly offered for sale.

Pineland petunia will last for years and comes up sparingly from ejected seeds near where it is planted.  Rich, mulched soil is best with  full sun to partial shade.

Mix this plant with seaside goldenrod, sunshine mimosa, salvia, gaillardia, and other plants that won’t crowd it.
